MoTiOn AnD sOuNd

This week we learned all about motion, friction, and gravity. It was a very productive and interesting week! I also started teaching Reading. It is a difficult subject because it requires persistence and patience, but I really enjoy working with each student. They are fast learners. I am beginning to see that the key to helping them learn is reviewing information. I have been so impressed with how they have applied their science lessons to real life. In some of the pictures you will see collages the students made. Each group was assigned a science vocabulary word. They did an incredible job finding different examples of motion, friction, and gravity. They were also able to explain the pictures. This week, ask your students if they spot examples of the vocabulary words mentioned. I am sure they will make you proud with their knowledge!

Wrapping up a GREAT 3 Weeks!

We completed our Social Studies unit on Native Americans this week. The students and I have really enjoyed learning about shelter, clothes, and sports this week. Many of them got the opportunity to play Native American stick ball, also known as Lacrosse. I played a year in college, so I was able to show them some pictures of a real game. They have enjoyed playing at recess. We learned a lot about where the Native Americans lived and what kinds of clothes they wore. Continue to ask your children what they learned, I want to keep this information fresh in their head for MAP testing! I am so proud of all the students; everyone improved on their tests! I have started planning for our next unit on Motion and Sound! We are once again going to learn so much and have a ton of fun!

A Week for the Arts!

This week we really dove into understanding Native American culture. We read a book about a young boy's artistic talent, and then tried out our own abilities. We painted sunsets on "buffalo hide" (paper bag). The students can tell you the long process of preparing the hide, which took us 2 days! This week we also took part in the telling of a Cherokee Legend, "How the Red Bird got its Color." The students used instruments to help me tell the story.

I began teaching math this past week, as well. We are off to a great start. It took a few days, but I think we are beginning to adjust to each other. You and your students can be working on math facts at home. I will be sending out some helpful practise worksheets this week.

Hello Parents and Students!

This week I had the privilege of teaching my first four lessons. We have started a unit on Native Americans. So far, we have studied Native American names, music, dance, and South Carolinian tribes. This next week we will look at Native American art, legends, and begin talking about Native American history.
On Monday we will begin our Buffalo Hide art project. I hope to post some pictures of the student's fantastic artwork! They are all so talented!
